Accessibility

Statement

The Food Savvy website is run by Hubbub Foundation UK, Suffolk County Council and Norfolk County Council. This website is covered by the disproportionate burden assessments by Suffolk County Council and Norfolk County Council, this means only a basic check of this website has been undertaken.  We are committed to providing a website that is accessible to the widest possible audience, regardless of technology or ability. For example, that means you should be able to:

  • navigate most of the website using just a keyboard

  • navigate most of the website using speech recognition software

  • listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)

  • we’ve also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.

AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.

We are actively working to increase the accessibility and usability of our website and in doing so adhere to many of the available standards and guidelines.

This website endeavours to conform to level Double-A of the World Wide Web Consortium W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0. These guidelines explain how to make web content more accessible for all people.

Whilst we strive to adhere to the accepted guidelines and standards for accessibility and usability, it is not always possible to do so in all areas of the website.

We are continually seeking out solutions that will bring all areas of the site up to the same level of overall web accessibility. In the meantime should you experience any difficulty in accessing the website, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

How accessible is this website?

We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible:

  • Some colour combinations might make text harder to read

  • Some of our videos don’t have captions or audio description

  • You can’t modify the line height or spacing of text

  • You can’t skip to the main content when using a screen reader or when using the keyboard (tabbing) to navigate the website

Non accessible content

We have listed below tests which have either failed or which there are issues with. We’ve added time frames for correcting these where possible. We will update the below information as the items are corrected (below is correct of 21st September 2020). The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.

Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations

1.Text

Result: Fail due to:

  • Some text conveys instructions that relies on a user’s ability to see the page.

  • Some link titles do not make sense out of context.

Fixed: December 2020

In review: There is no top-level heading on the homepage.

2. Images and links

Result: Fail due to:

  • Some image links are missing alternative text, so the information isn’t available to people using a screen reader.

Fixed: December 2020

In review: Some of the link text is used for links going to different destinations. This doesn’t meet WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.4.4 (link purpose in context).

3. Video

  • Some of the embedded videos do not contain a title attribute. This doesn’t meet WCAG 2.1 success criterion 4.1.2 (name, role, value).

  • Some of the embedded videos do not contain a supporting text transcript of audio content.

Action: We plan to add title attributes and transcripts to all videos embedded on the site by 31st December 2020.

Disproportionate burden

We have assessed the cost of fixing the issues with navigation and accessing information, and with interactive tools and transactions. We believe that doing so now would be a disproportionate burden within the meaning of the accessibility regulations.

4. Navigation and accessing information

  • Text links are not underlined. This doesn’t meet WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.4.1 (use of colour).

  • The colour of the text and the colour of the background are not in sufficient contrast to each other on some pages. This doesn’t meet WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.4.3 (contrast minimum).

  • There is no way to skip the repeated content in the page header with a ‘skip to main content’ option. This doesn’t meet WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.4.1 (bypass blocks).

  • Our navigation menus in the header and the footer of the site do not have visible focus. This doesn’t meet WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.4.7 (focus visible).

  • Navigating (tabbing) on the keyboard does not always highlight where you are on a page.

Action: Assess website functionality and resource required to restructure the website. Update this assessment with the course of action by 31st December 2020.

5.Technology

  • Not all pages adjust well to both landscape and portrait mode.

  • Text is too small in portrait mode for mobile users.

Action: We need to investigate costs/ practicalities of having these fixed or removed.
