Forgot milk?
We’ve all done it. Milk is one of the most wasted household items.
6.7 million pints of milk are wasted in Norfolk and Suffolk alone each year. That’s 51,000 bathtubs full of milk down the drain, costing households over £3 million! Whether it’s cow’s milk, oat milk, nut or soya, follow our simple steps below to get #MilkSavvy and make every drop count.
Think before you buy
Planning ahead is always a great way to help you buy what you need and the same goes for milk too. Think about what you’re going to use it for, a bigger bottle might be cheaper but if you’re going to throw some away it starts to get expensive and is such a waste. Will you use it all before it goes out of date?
Love Food Hate waste have a nifty tool, a portion calculator to help you buy just the right amount of milk and any other food, a must for your next meal plan.
Freeze what you can’t drink
40% of people in Norfolk and Suffolk don’t know that they can, or forget to, freeze milk.
In fact you can freeze just about any food. Check out our quick guide to what can and can’t be frozen.
Milk can be frozen safely right up to the day of its ‘use by’ date. If you only have a dash, pop it in an ice-cube tray. Freeze now, teas later!
Almond, oat and soya milks are also very popular, delicious and too good to throw away. Store these fresh milks and opened milk in the fridge.
Check out the storage instructions as some of them can be frozen too. You can also use them in recipes that require milk such as pancakes, soups and lots of sauces.
Check your fridge temp
The average UK fridge temperature is set at a way too hot 7°C. This is terrible news for milk which can perish quickly when not stored at the right temp. Make sure your fridge is set between 0- 5˚C, food can last up to 3 days longer at these temperatures.
Don’t have a fridge thermometer? Find the right setting for your fridge.
If you can, avoid storing milk in your fridge door. This is often the warmest part of the fridge.
Now you’re milking it…
Milk isn’t just for drinking. No matter what kind of milk drinker you are, milk will find a happy home in a range of dishes.
