January

You might think that there aren’t many fruit and vegetables in season this month but you’d be surprised! We’ve selected some of our favourites from the list below to help you plan your shop and cook up some great dishes.

Apple, beetroot, Brussel sprouts, cauliflower, celeriac, celery, chicory, horseradish, Jerusalem artichoke, kale, kohlrabi, leeks, parsnips, pear, potatoes, rhubarb, salsify, shallots, swede, turnips.

Apples

  • There’s nothing better than a crisp and juicy apple, unfortunately a staggering 860,000 apples are thrown away every day in the UK.

  • Apples last up to two weeks longer in the fridge in their original packaging.

  • If you buy them loose, pop them in a reusable container in the fridge.

Apple & ginger cake and Spiced apple chutney are two great ways to use up any apples that you might have.

Cauliflower

  • Keep cauliflower fresher for longer by storing in the fridge.

  • Cauliflower can be frozen in a sealed bag or container for up to 3 months.

  • Don’t forget, the stalks and leaves of a cauliflower are delicious too! Cook along with the florets or slice raw and add to salads.

Potatoes

  • It’s time to save our spuds! Every day we throw away 2.9 million whole potatoes in the UK!

  • If potatoes have sprouted, simply remove the sprouts before use.

  • Just give green or rotten bits the chop before cooking, they’re still good to eat.

  • Potatoes are best kept in a cool, dry and dark place. Store them in the fridge and they can last 3 times longer than those in a cupboard.

Not sure what to do with your spuds? What about Potato Ishtoo, Potato gnocchi or Fish cakes?
