Fabulous fresh fruit
Fruit looks and tastes great, it’s good for us and we can eat several portions a day, so a win all round.
Unfortunately fresh fruit often gets thrown away as it can go off very quickly. As it’s such a fab food, we want to help you make the most of it so why not check out our storage tips and have a go at some of our fruity recipes.
Apples
Last up to two weeks longer in the fridge in their original packaging. If you buy them loose, pop them in a reusable container in the fridge.
Apples can be frozen in slices after they have been quickly cooked in boiling water. Freeze in a single layer, then pack into bags once frozen.
Use up surplus apples in an Apple and ginger cake or Spiced pumpkin and apple loaf. Wrinkly apples are great for pickles and chutneys.

Citrus fruits
Oranges, grapefruits and lemons look great in the fruit bowl but last much longer in the fridge.
They can also be frozen, simply slice and freeze, or juice into ice cube trays for adding to drinks and cooking.
Grapes
Store them in the fridge, if you don’t think you will use them in time wash them and freeze individually to use as tasty ice cubes or to blend into smoothies.
As well as a tasty snack grapes add a refreshing bite to a salad and are great with cheese and biscuits.
Why not try Overnight oats, a lovely healthy breakfast especially with a handful of berries on top. And when things hot up Yoghurt fruit ice lollies are great to keep you cool. Summer pudding is a light, refreshing dessert and so easy to make
Fresh or frozen berries are great in smoothies too!
Strawberries, raspberries & blueberries
You can be store all types of berries in the fridge in their original packaging or pop them in a jar with a lid.
Berries can go off very quickly, if you don’t want to use then straight away pop them in the freezer, there’s lots of Frozen berry recipes from BCC Good Food.
Pears
Pears make a lovely compote that you can enjoy with rice pudding or breakfast oats, it’s also delicious with yoghurt. Just chop the pears, add a little sugar and water and simmer until the pears are cooked and thick.

It’s not just apples and grapes that go well with cheese, add a few slices of pear to your cheeseboard too.
Don’t forget, fruit juices can be used to make salad dressings. Try mixing orange juice, honey, mustard and a small amount of balsamic vinegar.
